Historic city centre
Our Hlavná Street used to be a medieval square of a lens-like shape that, based on one of Milan Lasica’s quotes “evokes the atmosphere of the Austrian-Hungarian Empire...”. We can only agree as, in our Apartment you often“come across”Queen Elisabeth of Bavaria and her husband Franz Joseph I.
A night walk along Hlavná Street is a moment one will never forget. Playful lights give the icons of Košice a completely different feel. The Cathedral, State Theatre, Malá Scéna included, Beggar’s House or Andrassy’s Palace, one of many palaces in Košice, hide centuries-old stories one is surely to learn about. The gratitude of those Košice citizens who survived the 1709-1710 plague epidemic symbolises the statuary of Virgin Mary built from the funds they had raised in the place where military gallows used to be.
The northern side of our Hlavná Street starts at the square with a marathon runner statue which symbolises the oldest marathon race in Europe. It is 42 km long and it has been organised since 1924. At the same square, there is the building of a museum which displays Košice Gold Treasure discovered during construction work in 1935 that is considered the biggest finding in Slovakia in terms of the variety of golden coins it contains.
